In plain English

Washington’s Paid Family & Medical Leave lets workers take up to 12 weeks of paid time off for health issues, family care, or bonding with a new child. You earn leave by paying into the program through payroll deductions. Apply through the Employment Security Department if you need time off for a serious health condition, caregiving, or other qualifying reasons.

Washington’s Paid Family & Medical Leave program helps workers take paid time off for specific reasons:

  1. Your own serious health condition.
  2. Caring for a family member with a serious health condition.
  3. Bonding with a new child (birth, adoption, or foster care).
  4. Supporting a family member preparing for military service overseas.

You earn leave by paying into the program through payroll deductions. When you qualify, you can take up to 12 weeks of leave in a 52-week period. You receive up to 2/3 of your regular wages, but payments are capped at a state-determined amount.

To apply, you must have worked at least 12 weeks (about 680 hours) in the past year. You can apply for yourself or on behalf of someone else. The Employment Security Department handles the process. Before applying, check if your situation meets the program’s requirements and if now is the right time to start.
